Hope, Glory, Power: The Three Gifts of the Opened Eye

Picture yourself at dawn in a dark room. You've been navigating by feel — bumping furniture, guessing at shapes. Then the sun rises through the window. Nothing in the room changed. But now you see what was always there.
That is this prayer. Paul doesn't ask God to add things to you. He asks that the eyes of your heart be enlightened — that light would fill a room already full of treasure you couldn't see in the dark. And when the light comes, three things become visible.
1. Hope — the North Star that rises from within
Why it matters. Without vision, the people perish (Proverbs 29:18). A traveler with no destination doesn't stand still — he drifts. Distracted by every side road, delayed by every comfortable stop, confused at every fork. Hope is the fixed star that ends the drifting.
The mechanism. His calling plants a destiny inside you — it rises up, it isn't imported. Hope is not a wishful feeling; it is direction burned into the heart. Once you can see the star, every step orients to it automatically. You stop asking "which way?" at every turn, because your eyes are fixed above.
How it happens. You behold Him, and the calling comes into focus. Facing Him is how you see the star.
2. Glory — the treasure hidden in one another
Why it matters. "The riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints." His treasure is deposited in people — in the person across the table, across the bed, across the office. And here is the sober edge: a heart looking for fault is blind to this glory. You cannot uncover treasure in someone you are busy judging.
The mechanism. Enlightened eyes go treasure-hunting. Where the critical eye sees a problem to fix, the enlightened eye sees gold God buried, waiting to be uncovered and called out. This is the tree of life growing up in another — love, joy, peace, faith — and your seeing helps it grow.
How it happens. When your heart is cleared of judgment, the glory in others becomes visible. Clean the lens; the treasure appears.
3. Power — the charge that comes only face-to-face
The image. You are an electric vehicle. The engine is willing, the road is clear — but an EV runs on charge. Face the Father and the cable is connected: resurrection power, the very force that emptied the tomb and enthroned the King, flows toward you who believe. Turn your face away — through sin, fear, pride — and you coast for a while on stored charge, then the vehicle dies on the roadside, engine intact but powerless.
The mechanism. The power is relational, not stored. It transfers through the facing. This is why "pray without ceasing" is not a rule but a lifeline — it keeps the cable plugged in. Look away and you starve; stay faced and you're charged, all day.
Why this makes a sanctified tongue
Here is how the three gifts become grace on your lips — see first, then speak:
- Hope gives your words a direction. You speak to move people toward the upward call, not down toward despair. Your tongue becomes a compass.
- Glory gives your words their content. Because you see the treasure God buried in a person, you can speak it out — calling forth the gold instead of cataloguing the dirt. Your tongue becomes a shovel.
- Power gives your words their weight. Words from a charged heart carry life; they heal the brokenhearted and open prison doors (Luke 4:18). Words from a depleted heart are just noise.
The lips of the righteous feed many (Proverbs 10:21) — but only lips fed first by hope, glory, and power.
For today
- Face Him first (charge). In your five-minute window, before anything, turn your face fully toward the Father. Pray Paul's prayer back: "Enlighten the eyes of my heart. Show me hope, glory, power." Don't ask for tasks; ask for sight.
- Speak hope into one person (direction). Find someone weary today and speak the word in season — one sentence that points them upward.
- Uncover one treasure (glory). Pick one person you're tempted to judge. Ask the Lord what gold He buried in them. Then say it to them out loud. Watch the shield come down.
- Stay plugged in (power). Every water break, every transition, turn your face back for ten seconds. Keep the cable connected all day. A charged heart speaks charged words.
Father of glory, open my eyes. Let me see the star, the treasure, and the fire — and let it all pour out through a sanctified tongue that feeds many. Amen.
